Plaza de España, Madrid – Spain

The remodeling project of the Plaza de España and its surroundings UTE PLAZA ESPAÑA (FCC-PACSA), signed by the architects LORENZO FERNÁNDEZ-ORDÓÑEZ, ARÁNZAZU LA CASTA and FERNANDO PORRAS-ISLA, with more than 1000 cutting files that have given rise to all the granite that can be seen in this location of the beautiful city of Madrid, it is not easy to summarize it better than with the words that they send us from their study of architecture.

“The works in the area around the Plaza de España, in the centre of Madrid, are the most important that have been carried out in this city in the last ten years. They are located in the most monumental part of the historic centre, next to the Royal Palace. They completely transform the mobility of the car, and double the surface area of squares and pedestrian walkways, creating a space of clean air in which more than 1,000 trees have been planted. In addition to the vegetation. Benches, pavements, copings, kerbs, kerbs, curbs, imposts, cornices and special pieces have brilliantly resolved all the details on the surface of this new urban unit to make each solution a reality, drawing together, piece by piece, the hundreds of stereotomic assemblies applied in the work”.

Surrounding the Plaza de España, there are large benches with a double function, that of a planter and that of a bench. Some of the pieces were carved to allow the incorporation of wooden backs and seats.
